CornellALERT: Cold and Icy Weather Preparedness – Feb 16 – 18, 2025

February 16, 2025

Cornell’s emergency management team is monitoring potentially disruptive winter weather forecast to impact the Ithaca area overnight tonight and early this week. Below freezing temperatures return this evening and may cause icy conditions on outdoor surfaces. Cold temperatures and gusty winds are expected to persist and cause frigid wind chill conditions through Wednesday.

Cornell encourages campus community members to prepare for and protect themselves from these cold conditions. When possible, minimize the time you spend outside and protect yourself by dressing for the weather, such as by wearing multiple layers of clothing.

Cornell Grounds personnel will be treating roadways and sidewalks, but slippery conditions may occur. Take caution when exiting and entering vehicles and when walking on icy or covered sidewalks and street crossings. Visit the Environment, Health and Safety Winter Safety page for more guidance.

Cornell generally operates on a normal schedule unless the weather poses significant safety hazards. Decisions on whether to remain open, to delay, or close and cancel classes are based on many factors, including the expected intensity and duration of the inclement weather. These decisions are announced as soon as possible and updated as necessary.

If the university remains open in inclement weather, employees should make reasonable efforts to maintain their regular work schedules but are advised to avoid undue travel risks. Supervisors are encouraged to be reasonably flexible if personal weather-related travel conditions impact an employee’s ability to reach campus. Employees who can complete their job responsibilities remotely may be permitted to do so. Find more guidance on the Working at Cornell’s Inclement Weather page.
