CornellALERT: Cold Weather Awareness
This week Ithaca and the surrounding region will experience a period of cold temperatures and wind chill values below zero degrees Fahrenheit. The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for part of the week, with the coldest temperatures expected during the overnight and early morning hours each day.
While campus operations are expected to continue, Cornell encourages members of all campus communities to prepare for and protect themselves from these cold conditions.
When possible, minimize the time you spend outside and protect yourself by dressing for the weather. Precautions include:
• Wearing multiple layers of clothing, including an insulated layer.
• Wearing a windproof outer layer to block the wind.
• Wearing a warm hat that protects your ears.
• Protecting your hands with gloves or mittens.
• Covering exposed skin, especially your nose, with a scarf or face mask.
• Wearing sturdy, water resistant boots with warm socks.
A Cold Weather Advisory means that temperatures in some locations could cause frostbite on unexposed skin in as little as thirty minutes. There is also a risk of hypothermia if you spend enough time outdoors in cold weather.
Check the National Weather Service’s Binghamton website for updates to the forecast and cold weather advisory.
